Security in a country hosting a war

Just to give you a taste of the security and fear in Islamabad, let me tell you what it is like getting into our hotel. You pull your car up to the first checkpoint at the hotel where there are 6 to 10 armed men.  The men circle the car, look under it, lift hood and look inside....open the back and look inside ...and question us, the occupants.  One we get the pass through, a metal gate is ... read more

Markets can be dangerous

Markets in Pakistan can be very dangerous.  Above is a picture in a market - but we were very careful to go to a market at a time we knew there would not be crowds (during the call to prayer time when most of the people are in the Mosques.)  Markets are dangerous when there are crowds since killers want to kill many....so this was a safe trip. ... read more

sun is coming up...

Since we got into Pakistan so late - about three thirty am - we elected not to sleep but to work. In anticipation of our interview with Secretary of State Clinton, I am (and have been) researching and reading. After the interview with the Secretary we are going to head out - perhaps go to some sights of recent bombings. Yes, we are and will be careful. We will be in Pakistan until tomorrow when we ... read more

car check

Security just stopped our car ....checked under hood ...no doubt looking for explosives as we approach hotel. Remember: the Mariott was bombed here not so long ago. Now they are looking at our bags. There is less security to get near the White House in DC ... read more

Empty Iranian Embassy in Wash DC

As you know, the US and Iran severed diplomatic relations in 1980 (in late 1979 they seized our American Embassy and held our Americans hostage for 444 days.)  We went to the Iranian Embassy yesterday and took a look at it.  It sure is rundown.  I like to take pictures like this since I assume you won't get a chance to get to DC and see it for yourself.  By the way, I don't know who took what ... read more

where are we?

Where are we? Standing in the rain....doing wraps for a special we are working on. And no, rain was not something we were hoping for but since I am leaving the USA late tomorrow, we have to deal with it now. When you see the special - I will tell you more about it later - you will have to tell me whether I look like a drowned rat on it or not. More later.... ... read more

Senator Cornyn: "Tag! You are it!"

OK, this was funny...and does fall under my favorite headline: never dull US Senator Cornyn just effectively dumped a heckler on me.  ("Tag, you are it!") The heckler was apparently stalking him when the Senator arrived to do an interview with us in the Senate Office Building.   The guy drifted away when we were doing the interview (I appreciate that) and then, as soon as the interview ... read more
