I give up! What does this mean?

I give up! What does this (below) mean? "America's first Pacific president?"   Maybe you know? If so, post it here...because I must be missing something. Does he mean because he grew up in Hawaii?

I received this breaking news flash (below) from Politico and read it about 5 times and I have yet to figure out what exactly President Obama means as he bills himself  "America's first Pacific president."

Does he mean that he will do more in the Pacific region than any President before him? That might make President Nixon "roll over in his grave" since he opened up China -- something that few thought would ever happen.  Another remarkable event in history is that Japan became our ally (no one who fought in or lived through World War II would ever dream we could be friends with Japan!)  That was done before President Obama so he can't do that.  I supposed he could convince North Korea to give up nuclear weapons (that would be great.)  We already have a good relationship with South Korea so he really can't do huge things there.  The war in Viet Nam is over.  OK, China DOES own a lot of US debt -- but the way the US is going deeper into debt everyday makes it unlikely that he will free us from our debt to China....so I give up....what DOES he mean by this? (By the way, does he mean Hawaii? We already own that one!)

My guess? The tens of thousands of marines, sailors, soldiers and airmen who fought in the Pacific theatre in WWII think that President Roosevelt and / or President Truman are the Pacific Presidents.

(He must mean because he grew up in Hawaii, right?)

    POLITICO Breaking News:

    -----------------------------------------------------

TOKYO -- Trying to reassure allies and rivals, President Barack Obama billed himself Friday as "America's first Pacific president," promising the nations of Asia "a new era of engagement with the world based on mutual interests and mutual respect."

Mickey Rovero

After his first ten months in office, it is now abundantly clear that he has the worlds greatest Finesse at elloquent hollow words and personal Presidential Military inaction. When he said he was America's first Pacific President, I think that every one mis-heard. He probably was realy saying that he was America's first "Pacifist" President.

What about him saying, "When I was a young boy, my mother brought me to Kamakura, where I looked up at that centries old symbol of peace and tranquility-the great bronze Amida Buddah." Is that where he finds true peace? Wow!

Barack Obama NEVER lived in the Philippines

“After giving it some more thought, I've decided that perhaps obama did mean that he was from the Pacific ocean area. He did grow up in the Philippines, …. In her case, that would be foreign muslim men living in countries other than America, and in particularly the Philippines.” ***************************** Barack Obama NEVER lived in the Phiippines. From ages six to ten, Obama attended local schools in Jakarta (Indonesia). Both the Philippines and Indonesia ARE in Asia. In 1971, Barack Obama returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents, Madelyn and Stanley Dunham. Obama attended Punahou School, a private college preparatory school, from the fifth grade until his graduation from high school in 1979.

I am confused....I thought he was the first African-American President. The first African President, the first President from Chicago, the first President to get with the homeboys, now he's trying to be Asian????? Get real! He's not smart enough to be Asian!

Who cares what people call Obama or even what he calls himself. What counts is how many people call themselves 'employed.' Let's get serious.....the only reason Obama is globe trotting is to avoid serious responsibility to our troops and to those people his economic policies have hurt; to avoid criticism over his decision to try the 'criminals' from the middle east in NYC; and to refuel his gigantic ego. I think I will just turn off the TV for another three days or so.....

BHO described his childhood to Nicholas Kristof (3/6/07) as that of a "Jakarta street kid"-hence the Pacific Prez. I think he actually believed Kristof's headline, that he is a "Man of the World," now Pres. of same. It's obvious to me: he's punishing America for his childhood perception of deprivation, by weakening our country. From foreign relations to the economy,it's all about him, all of the time. Never mind the empty space at the top of the chain of command, we have a narcissist in chief.

obama the pacifican

After giving it some more thought, I've decided that perhaps obama did mean that he was from the Pacific ocean area. He did grow up in the Philippines, his mother was most attached to that area, and in his heart, I suspect that, like many children, his heartstrings are tied rather tightly to whatever his mother loved. In her case, that would be foreign muslim men living in countries other than America, and in particularly the Philippines.

Just_Saying

Obama did grow up in Hawaii and Indonesia, and those are in the Pacific Ocean. I tend to agree with Huey: "Obama considers himself president of the world"

November 14, 2009 at 3:14 am

Auntie

Greta, Hawaii is considered one of the Islands in the Pacific Rim so I would assume that Obama was referring to having been the first president from Hawaii==Pacific Rim. Most Americans that are from the mainland of the U.S. and/or haven't lived in Hawaii probably wouldn't automatically know this and shouldn't be rudely slammed for it. Besides, what in the heck is wrong about asking a question about something we don't know the answer to?? That is a part of learning.

Pacifist

Maybe he meant PACIFIST President! When the U.S. is attacked he'll have us get down on our knees and ask for mercy!

Come on Greta, you've got a very expensive education and you don't know what he means? It's not that hard to figure this one out. Check this out: Main Entry: pa·cif·ic Pronunciation: \pə-ˈsi-fik\ Function: adjective Etymology: Middle English pacifique, from Latin pacificus, from pac-, pax peace + -i- + -ficus -fic — more at pact Date: circa 1548 1 a : tending to lessen conflict : conciliatory b : rejecting the use of force as an instrument of policy 2 a : having a soothing appearance or effect b : mild of temper : peaceable 3 capitalized : of, relating to, bordering on, or situated near the Pacific Ocean — pa·cif·i·cal·ly \-fi-k(ə-)lē\ adverb

Greta, my first thought was someone told Obama he is a "pacifist" president and he mistook it as "Pacific." I mean, Nixon and Ford could have been considered Pacific presidents, so could Reagan. They all grew up or claimed the West Coast as home. And the Pacific ocean got its name for being peaceful. At least that is what I was taught in school years ago. I don't consider Obama peaceful or pacifist. I consider him either weak or deliberately trying to destroy America.

Bert

I'm really tired of the President saying he's going to open up a new era of relations with foreign governments. we have always had dialouge with governments even when there are disagrements There are always going to be countries that don't agree with our great nation. We don't have to appologize for anything. We are the most giving nation in the world. Those that criticize are the first to ask us for help

November 14, 2009 at 12:53 am

Greta, Why are you racking your brains about

this? He is a MEGALOMANIAC! He can't help but spread his scent to every corner of the earth.
