After a while you wonder if anyone knows what telling the truth means. When you are slick with the facts, it is a lie. The New York Times sugar coats it with the word "confusion" (see below) but it is just a big fat lie and we should call it that.
Oprah...President Clinton...and even I have been conned (and yes, thousands of others.) We all promoted and gave to an organization called KIVA which we all thought was an opportunity to give small loans (micro lending) to people starting businesses in other countries. There is no doubt in my mind that KIVA was slick (lied) ...they had me thinking my money was going directly to certain people. On their website, I even got to pick out to whom I wanted my money to go.
So what happened with the money? Read the article below... (and by the way, why won't the New York Times say it like it is? confusion? no....lie....or if the New York Times feels politically incorrect to use the word lie, how about corrupt? or here is another one, "we been had...again." )
Confusion on Where Money Lent via Kiva Goes

....lenders like Mr. Kristof were not making direct loans. Borrowers like Ms. Cruz already have loans from microfinance institutions by the time their pictures are posted on Kiva’s Web site.
Thus, the direct person-to-person connection Kiva offered was in fact an illusion....'

I am new to kiva, only been around about 3 weeks. I do not understand how this has got blown so out of proportion. I was fully aware of the fact that I was not lending directly to the individual but that my pay back was based on a particular individual. I learned this on my own by reading and investigating kiva for myself. I made the choice to make several loans knowing how the system works and plan on making many more. I hope people will understand the system works and is helping people.

(Michigan) on TV with one lie after another. Makes me angry!

Greta instead of donating money to help businesses over seas why don't you donate money to small businesses here at home. It seems like the people over seas get enough help from our government.

I have always been cautious about donating,so it's not just a product of my skeptical old age. I simply only send donations to long established charities, or to long time known local causes (Arboretum,Pet Rescue or community projects) Perhaps I miss some deserving causes, but I do not get trapped in wasting money on fake fronts for "charities".
