Which do you want to fly: Northwest or Delta?

What is going on with airines??? Two weeks ago we heard about the two Northwest pilots that overshot the airport by 90 minutes or so.  We still don't know what they were doing in the cockpit that they did not hear the frequent calls from the ground. (I am suspicious they were watching movies on their laptops with headphones...why else would they be distracted and not hear? But that is just my guess....)

But now check this out!!  A Delta plane falling apart from the air!!

So tell me which airline would you opt for if you had a choice: Delta or Northwest?

ROOSEVELT, N.Y. — An engine tail cone popped off a Delta airlines jet shortly after takeoff from New York’s Kennedy Airport. It plummeted thousands of feet into a Long Island neighborhood before landing harmlessly on someone’s lawn.

FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac said Friday the jet doesn’t need the part to fly and passengers weren’t in any danger.

Neither the pilots nor people on the ground noticed the mishap when it happened.

The flight continued to its destination. Salac says Delta personnel reported the part missing after the plane landed in Tokyo.

The 20-pound part measured 4-feet long and 3-feet in diameter. A resident spotted it hours later and called police.

Delta says an investigation is under way.

I'm not to impressed with either airline as so many airlines are saving money and safety is not always the first thing that gets first priority.

First, I never like to give out my favorites for fear that it will become over-run with people after hearing word of mouth. I like to keep it to myself for as long as possible (like the little gem of an airline mentioned recently in these posts). That said, I would take Northwest over Delta anyday. Never had a mentionable issue with Northwest - can't say that about the other. I probably will not be flying with the new owners now that NWA has been taken over.

Another lovely little airline out of MSP is my favorite, Sun Country Airlines. I first flew from Los Angeles one way to MSP for 39.99 in 1987. We were all holding our breath wondering what kind of jet was going to show for that price. A beautiful airliner showed and when I got on board I commented that I could smell coffee. The gal behind me said for this price, no way. We were treated to a lovely lunch en route. Wholesome Minnesota hospitality. Happy with their service ever since.

The choice is the consumer's to make, same as choosing between FNC or State-Run Media

prefer neither, thank you very much

must say, my last journey on AA wasn't great. Now, Virgin Atlantic was a totally amazing experience!

Greta, "the jet doesn't need the part to fly"?!! I'll stick to Southwest - or better yet, drive!

The pilots who overshot their airport is probably an isolated incident and I don't think it reflects on the airlines, just those two pilots.

They are actually the same airline--under the same umbrella.

Between the two, it would have to be Northwest. I believe that since the airlines laid off their maintenance staff and began contracting out the jobs to other companies, who have no alligence to the airline, the planes are less safe to fly. Not only are they less safe to fly they are just plain filthy!! Who knows when they were last cleaned. The CEO of Delta should be embarrassed at the condition of his fleet of airplanes.

To get up in a mechanical flying bird, thousands of feet in the air, is to take a risk - no matter what airline one flies. If it's Delta or NW today, it'll be SW or US Air tomorrow. You fly, you take your chances.

You can pretty much keep all of the airlines as far as I am concerned. I will continue to "Take the Chevy to the levee" or I just won't go!

The last time I flew on Northwest was in the late seventies on a 747 to Hawaii. It was called Northwest-Orient then.
