Do you know anyone who suffers from epilepsy? If you do, chances are you know how horrible it is and how it also - although few will admit it - effects family members of those who have it. It is tough on teh person who has it as well as all who love that person. Imagine walking down the street and not knowing if suddenly you are going to get hit with a seizure! Your life is a ticking bomb. Epilepsy has not been cured and so far no medicine has been found to handle the terrible disorder. Can't we change that?
Tonight I went to an event about epilepsy. David Axelrod and his wife Susan have a wonderful daughter named Lauren who suffers from epilepsy and the family is using their sadness to put the spotlight on the problem -- hoping to raise money to find a cure so that others and other families don't have to suffer.
This was one of those Washington events that crossed all lines -- people from different political parties, competing news organizations, etc. When it comes to serious illnesses, people don't take sides -- we are all in it together...except we should all take sides against the disorder or disease.
If you know someone who suffers from epilepsy....or you have a family member or friends, you might want to help (click below.) If you are lucky enough not to know anyone who suffers, you still might want to help. This seems like one of those mysterious disorders that we should be able to solve...treat...and prevent. We just have to put our attention on it and work together.
I have simple complex seizures and I have to take the medication Keppra 2000 mg. daily to help control them. I started having seizures when I was 49 years old. Cause unknown? It is terrifying living with epilepsy. we do need more medical research into this.
Re: "Epilepsy has not been cured and so far no medicine has been found to handle the terrible disorder." -- That is absolutely UNTRUE! There is now quite a number of approaches to monitor the disease and medications to alleviate it. A lot depend on its origin/etiology.
Thank you for talking about epilepsy and making people aware of this disease. My niece has epilepsy. She is two years old.
Fox News, you are a great company. I don't care what Barrack says about you.
When I was in my mid twenties I knew a young woman who lived in the apartment complex where I resided. She had her license revoked because she had a seizure while behind the steering wheel. Without going into details, it made the news. Fortunately, she did not sustain any injuries nor did she injure anyone else. I felt sad for her -- she had to now rely on someone else to take her. I wish researchers will find cures for all types of diseases. God willing, maybe some day there will be cures
Given that Franken chose to highlight her case, you might assume that the courts ruled in Haliburton’s favor, and that she was not able to bring her claims in court instead of to an arbitrator. But then you would be wrong. The courts ruled that Halliburton could not arbitrate her claims of assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent hiring, retention and supervision of employees involved in the assault, and false imprisonment.
So why did Franken offer his amendment to ban arbitration? And why an amendment that applies to every company with contracts with the DOD, not just Halliburton? Because it has little to do with ensuring that Jamie Jones gets justice. The courts have already allowed Jones’ lawsuit to go forward. This amendment is a move towards the plaintiff bar’s longstanding goal of banning dispute arbitration. But the allegations in this case are so egregious that it makes it difficult for Members of Congress to stand up for the rights of law-abiding employers.
This discussion is supposed to be about epilepsy. I'm one of the lucky ones. As long as I take carbamazepine (Tegretol), it controls the seizures. They started when I was pregnant with my son, who turned out to be autistic. It greatly limits a persons ability to live a normal life. Because mine are controlled, I can drive. Most epileptics can't drive. My sis in law just complained to me that an epileptic who works with her should be fired. That is typical of the discrimination we face.
Newt was on C-Span this morning, reliving his good old days of the early 90s. Somebody needs to shock him back to reality and remind him that was nearly twenty years ago.
He also named Haley Barbour as one of the upcoming national Republican leaders. Ha ha Newt you're sooo out of touch with reality.
Well the republicans let limbaugh take the lead , and they followed. limbaugh said OBAMA must fail. Every republican in congress were afraid to think for them selves. limbaugh seems a threat to all gopers. Now they have put themselves in this box and now they none seem to get out. All they had to do was to work with the dems. and give the american people health care. No, they decided they wanted to give OBAMA his waterloo, BUT IT SEEMS the repubs. have reached their waterloo.
Why isn't the economy more important than healthcare?
With a good economy healthcare would BE more affordable, that is unless it's a takeover! ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID!
Get rid of the corruption, and self interest, you get rid of the problem! BUT, THAT MAKES SENSE, and the government is not about SENSE!
Michael Steele has a plan to increase the Republican's popularity: He has signed a contract with that Colorado family to build and launch balloons for the party!
Here are some additional public polling numbers likely to comfort Democrats concerned about the 2010 elections.
A new Research Corporation Poll shows that the Republican Party's favorability rating is the lowest since the height of its efforts to impeach former President Bill Clinton.
Texas governor race has got to help the Dem's in the state. As a native Texan who is old enough to have lived in the state when they didn't know what a Republican was. If they ever figure out what the Repub's have done to the state it will become Democratic again
Right now all we're hearing about is the struggle between Hutchinson and Perry. The rest of the country is so disgusted with Perry that we're rooting for Hutchinson to beat him out in the primaries.
Until then, whoever is crushing Perry is fine.
Texas Democrats watching the state's top two Republicans fight for their party's gubernatorial nomination are glad that Gov. Rick Perry and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison have apparently abandoned the Republicans' 11th Commandment, established during Ronald Reagan's run for California governor in 1966: Thou shall not speak ill of another Republican.
And they hope that the GOP gubernatorial battle creates enough division within the party to help Democrats in the general election and for years

WASHINGTON - Quick quiz: What do these enterprises have in common? Farm and construction machinery, Tupperware, the railroads, Hershey sweets, Yum food brands and Yahoo? Answer: They're all more profitable than the health insurance industry. In the health care debate, Democrats and their allies have gone after insurance companies as rapacious profiteers making "immoral" and "obscene" returns while "the bodies pile up."
Ledgers tell a different reality. Health insurance profit margins typically run about 6 percent, give or take a point or two. That's anemic compared with other forms of insurance and a broad array of industries, even some beleaguered ones.
Profits barely exceeded 2 percent of revenues in the latest annual measure. This partly explains why the credit ratings of some of the largest insurers were downgraded to negative from stable heading into this year, as investors were warned of a stagnant if not shrinking market for private plans.
Insurers are an expedient target for leaders who want a government-run plan in the marketplace. Such a public option would force private insurers to trim profits and restrain premiums to compete, the argument goes. This would "keep insurance companies honest," says President Barack Obama.
