It is no secret that the United States and other nations would like to see North Korea destroy their nuclear weapons program. Thus far the United States has not been successful in stopping the North Koreans -- and neither has the UN despite all the sanctions imposed.
One country is VERY close to North Korea and has much influence over them -- China. Is China doing all that it can to help with the nuclear weapons issue? Could China do more? Why isn't China doing more?
While in North Korea we went to the annual Arirang performance (we also saw it last year.) This is a huge event in North Korea where they honor their leaders - the Great Leader and Dear Leader. There is huge display of nationalism and it is evident from the performance that war is on their collective minds.
This year's event also marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and North Korea. (see the quote below from a BBC article) The mere fact that China was honored by the North Koreans at Arirang - a spectacular dance and gymnastics performance of 100,000 - is proof that China has much influence on North Korea. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was in North Korea last week and taken to the performance.
Thus the question: in light of China's role and influence in North Korea, is China doing all that it can? if not, why not? The last thing China wants is for Japan to get nervous about North Korea's nuclear weapons program. China does not want Japan to follow suit and develop nuclear weapons.

These weapons could later be used to help china in a war or they could even be made so that china can buy them.
